Busy Day: CMAS Solar Viewing, Business Meeting, GQ Star Party

Lots of news about a busy Saturday, February 1, 2014, all in one big post to keep things organized.

OVERVIEW OF SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2014

CMAS has accepted an invitation to bring solar telescopes to Merryspring in Camden at 10:00am on Saturday, February 1, 2014. That’s the same day as our February star party, so we’ll meet at nearby Galaxy Quest that night. In between and also nearby, we’ll gather for a business meeting at Jacob’s house and for lunch and dinner in Camden. Big day, big night!

DOODLE POLL

Naturally, there is a Doodle Poll for such a busy day. Please report your planned attendance at:

SOLAR VIEWING AT MERRYSPRING

Join CMAS at Merryspring Nature Center’s Winter Ecology Festival on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at 10:00am. Jacob and Dwight will bring three Hydrogen-Alpha solar telescopes between then, including the club’s 40mm Coronado PST, which would benefit from a volunteer to run it. Jon will bring a 60mm white-light scope. Solar telescopes will be set up until noon, or 1:00pm at the latest. This event features several activities running concurrently each hour, including handicraft lessons and snowshoeing. Some guests will be focused on solar viewing; participants in the other events will be encouraged to stop by the telescopes to see the Sun.

LUNCH

Pic-nic-ers are welcome to warm up inside the lunch room at Merryspring Nature Center. Restauranters can sample the many offerings in Camden.

BUSINESS MEETING

On Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 4:00pm, meet at Jacob’s house. Among topics for discussion is whether CMAS should automatically enroll all members in the Astronomical League. The League has many excellent programs, but administering automatic cross-enrollment is tedious, and it may be that not all CMAS members truly take advantage of the Leagues’s offerings.

DINNER IN CAMDEN

The exact location may vary with the whims expressed at the business meeting, but three likely locations are listed below. Cappy’s is a tradition in town, with funky decor and views of the harbor; seating is ample now that it has expanded into the shops next door. The Smokestack Grill serves all kinds of sandwiches. The Elm Street Grill is said to have the best pizza in town. Prices are about the same everywhere, with a lot on the menu for $12 to $15 per person, and a few items costing $7 or $8, or as little as $5 each if four people split a large pizza.

STAR PARTY AT GALAXY QUEST

Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 6:00pm, after dinner in town, we’ll drive the short trip to Galaxy Quest in Linconlville, home of the biggest telescope in Maine. Let’s see how that supernova in M82, the Cigar Galaxy, looks under dark skies through that 18″ Dob!

RAIN DATES

If Saturday, February 1, 2014, is cloudy, then the star party at Galaxy Quest may meet on Friday, January 31, or Sunday, February 2, but all other events (Merryspring, lunch, dinner, and business meeting) will be canceled.
