Transit of Mercury

Monday, May 9, 2016, 6:45am to 2:45pm
Location to be Decided

Mercury passes across the face of the sun about once every eight years. Maine’s weather forces us to cancel half of our star parties, and not every transit is visible from here, so the opportunity to see this occurs less often than once every sixteen years. Join us to observe the transit through at least two Hydrogen-Alpha and three white light solar telescopes. For those who have never seen the Sun through such a specially filtered telescope, the fissures, prominences, and sun spots are astonishing, all the more so when a comparatively tiny planet happens to be partially obstructing the view. Proposals are actively sought for an observing site with a clear view of the rising Sun.
