2018 ACADIA NIGHT SKY FESTIVAL

The 10th annual The Acadia Night Sky Festival is now just 4 weeks away. I
will start sending out important information about the details for your
participation as amateur astronomers in the coming weeks. This festival has
become known as a great collection of multiple lecture, demonstration and
observing events held under dark skies in one of the most beautiful areas in
the country. If you're bringing non-astronomer family members, there are
plenty of activities for them from hiking, bicycling, and climbing to
kayaking and whale watching. There are also lots of galleries, gardens,
museums, sightseeing and shopping for the less athletic.
We're expecting six thousand visitors this year, festival wide. Last year we
had 44 telescopes and 4 binocular stations. A total of 1,482 people rode the
buses to the top of Cadillac Mountain. Including those that drove directly
to the summit, the final count was 1,682 participants for the event. 71
Astronomers signed up for the Cadillac event and at 6:22 pm, I photographed
64 people in the parking lot including 4 rangers.
The year before, when we had a better forecast earlier in the week, we had
52 telescopes. I'd love to see 60 telescopes this year. Don't forget we
start off with a more modest event of around 400 visitors with about half as
many telescopes on Friday Night at Seawall Picnic area. This is a much more
relaxed event and I urge you to come early to participate there under the
darkest skies on the island. For the solar astronomer, we'll try again for
observing on the Bar Harbor Village Green Friday afternoon and Saturday
there is a regular extravaganza of Solar Viewing and astronomy lectures at
the Jackson Laboratory. As you will see in the listing below, there will
also be many interesting lectures at that venue. Participation is open to
everyone from beginners to seasoned experts. There has been great
camaraderie in helping those that are getting started and I can promise you
an amazing experience meeting people from all over the world who want to see
what you have to show in your telescope or binoculars.

WEB SITE
The web site is now fully up and functioning
http://www.acadianightskyfestival.com
<http://www.acadianightskyfestival.com/> and you will find a listing of
past and present participating clubs in the middle of the partners page
http://www.acadianightskyfestival.org/partners/ The full listing of events
is now up at http://www.acadianightskyfestival.org/events/ And be sure to
check out the biographies of all of this year's great speakers on their
respective events pages.

SIGNUP
In order to help the festival committee know how many astronomers to expect,
we are again asking you to sign up on a simple Doodle Poll
https://doodle.com/poll/gy8fmb5ydquvksya You are not committing to
anything, but if you think you will be coming, please add your name, and
check off which of the four observing events you plan to participate. If you
are affiliated with a club, please add those initials, too.

EVENTS
Following please find an abbreviated listing events for this year's
festival. For more comprehensive details, please
http://www.acadianightskyfestival.org/events/. Also, as there may be a few
last minute changes, please check online for the most current information.

A printable .PDF version is attached for your convenience.

A full astronomers package with general information and maps will be going
out early next week.
