Dear SMA Members and Friends,
Please come join us at the club meeting of Southern Maine Astronomers on Thursday, May 1, at 7 p.m. for what will be an intriguing discussion about the melding of cosmic images from space and art. Our speaker will be Dr. Elizabeth A. Kessler, an Advanced Lecturer in American Studies at Stanford University.
Images from high-powered telescopes, such as NASA’s James Webb and Hubble Space Telescopes, present the cosmos as vividly colored and brilliantly lit, a sublime astronomical landscape. Such views balance the need for scientifically valid representations with a desire for aesthetically powerful ones. This talk will explore how scientists and artists in the 20th and 21st century depict space and consider how astronomy and art help us understand our place in the universe.

With the James Webb Telescope, star-gazing has become even more sublime
Professor Kessler's research and teaching focus on twentieth and twenty-first century American visual culture and its intersections with science and technology. Her book, Picturing the Cosmos: Hubble Space Telescope Images and the Astronomical Sublime, on the aesthetics of deep space images, was published in 2012. Her work has also appeared in Aperture, Technology and Culture, The Journal of Visual Culture, and other publications.
We will also have our usual presentation from Russ Pinizzotto on what's up in Spring skies.
Please join us on zoom:
