Un-Cancellable Star Parties: Call for Speakers

Taking a cue from other clubs around New England, new for the year 2015, CMAS expands from being purely a club of observers into one that meets also to hear the most interesting speakers on astronomy that Maine has to offer. Rather than cancel oh-so-often due to bad weather, we will meet regularly to discuss astronomy’s most fascinating topics. We’ll observe whenever skies allow, yet retain good reason to meet regardless of the weather, just as often as speakers can be arranged.

CMAS is a club, so to maximize our collective success, we each need to volunteer our share of our collective extensive range of expertise. Our first volunteers are Club Liaison Dwight Lanpher, who will speak about preserving dark skies as one of Maine’s defining traits, and member Mark Reuillard, who has been studying how inconsistencies in the physical measurements supporting the Big Bang theory of creation suggest other possibilities of how we came to be. It’s a safe bet that for any one member with some special knowledge or curiosity about astronomy, there are countless others who share that interest, so everyone is a potential volunteer.

Please help CMAS build a new momentum by offering your own topics as speakers, and be sure to attend the talks offered by your fellow members. When ideas come to mind, call or email the Presidential Hotline. We’ll tailor all suggestions into memorable discussions for a club that enjoys astronomy regardless of the weather.
