January 2015 Star Party at DRA — Docents Needed

Join CMAS at The Damariscotta River Association Land Trust on January 16, 17, or 18, 2015 (weather deciding), as we welcome DRA’s members as honored guests to our January star party. DRA has long been a gracious host, allowing us to use their grounds after hours. Access to the farm house has been especially important, because it allows us to warm ourselves indoors, use conference rooms and lavatories, and tap electricity to drive our telescopes.

This party will be similar to those hosted for school groups, except that adults will likely outnumber children. We’ll show our guests whatever celestial objects the skies and the telescopes on hand best allow. About fifteen DRA members are predicted to attend, but the public is always welcome at our star parties, so bring all your other friends as well.

Given the current bout of quickly changeable weather, it would help to know how many astronomers and telescopes would show on each of the possible nights, so please visit this month’s Doodle poll to help plan the best possible star party.

Come see Comet C/1014 Q2 (Lovejoy), the bright surprise currently gracing our skies, along with distant galaxies, colored double stars, and glowing nebulae. With DRA’s heated clubhouse only steps away from the eyepiece, this is an excellent opportunity to appreciate the clear, steady skies that so often accompany winter weather.
