Volunteers are needed for a star party at Camp Mechuwana in Winthrop, Maine, on the weeknight of Wednesday, July 23, 2014. Mechuwana runs a science camp every summer, for campers of primary and middle school age. This party is guaranteed to occur. If the weather is clear, we’ll bring our telescopes and show them the stars. If the weather is bad, we’ll teach what we can. During last summer’s heavily clouded but rainless session, we used a tennis ball with a streamer attached to illustrate how a comet’s tail blew in the solar wind, and then had the children march in a giant human orrery, to learn the movement of the planets. Word from the children is that this is a great camp and that astronomy is among its highlights, so join us for an audience with tomorrow’s eager scientists. If you can help, please call or email Jon.
